LISNR’s high-frequency, inaudible technology is already revolutionizing how people communicate with the world around them, but we’re always looking for ways to make it even better.
With LISNR 5.0, we’re introducing new product features and improvements to our Smart Tones that will make device-to-device connectivity and delivering memorable experiences easier than ever before.
Here’s what you can expect in the new release and our fifth iteration of our tones.
Improved Reliability
This release contains a significant change in the structure of the tone itself, extending the reliable reach of Smart Tones even in challenging, noisy or reverb-filled environments such as stadiums or concert halls.
This means that instead of reaching half of the users down in a basement, for example, or out at a far-flung hotdog stand, we can now consistently reach all of them.
Improved Efficiency
Consumers expect things to happen instantaneously now, and we’re working to push the product forward to meet those expectations.
We have made several changes that increase the efficiency of data transmission with this round of updates. This means we can deliver experiences to more users, larger areas and with a higher level of accuracy than ever before.
With this new round of updates, LISNR-enabled devices can now detect a Smart Tone as fast as 0.6 seconds. For example, you can trigger a device to display a coupon or other event within one second of detecting a tone. This is huge for today’s users who expect to get what they want immediately.
Introducing Local Tone Generation
Local Tone Generation enables device-to-device communication, bypassing the need for a separate network. Our tones can be decoded and encoded directly from the device, so no additional connectivity is needed. This new feature opens the door for a wide variety of devices to interact with each other on a wide scale without other forms of connectivity.
Prior to this release, the customer’s app had to pass data to our server to be turned into a tone, downloaded from our server to the user’s device and then played back. We are taking all of the magic of creating a tone on a server and baking it into the mobile API, allowing significant flexibility and speed to build out the best user experiences possible.
For example, you can now use tones to safely and securely authenticate users for mobile payment, venue check-in and other use cases that may require some form of authentication.
And it’s incredibly reliable, with 100% connectivity in multi-environment tests.

LISNR is a high-frequency, inaudible technology, a new communication protocol that sends data over audio. As the leader in the Internet of Sound, we use inaudible sound waves called Smart Tones to transmit information. LISNR sends customizable packets of data every second, enabling proximity data transmission, second-screen functionality, authentication and device-to-device connectivity on any LISNR-enabled device. We enable this functionality reliably and more efficiently than Bluetooth (proximity), ACR (2nd Screen) and NFC/RFID (authentication). As an integrated software partner, LISNR powers devices to connect with the world better than ever before.
