Transport Ticketing Global Awards shortlists LISNR for Ticketing Technology of the Year

Recently, LISNR was shortlisted for the Ticketing Technology of the Year for the 2017 Transport Ticketing Global Awards. This annual event, taking place on January 24 and 25 in Old Billingsgate, London, is the world's biggest public transport gathering and features some of the industry's greatest influencers. It is an opportunity and celebration for advancements in smart ticketing, intelligent travel and connected cities. The Ticketing Technology of the Year category, in particular, seeks to honor a company that created an entirely new product promising to redefine ticketing as we know it – and that is exactly what LISNR has done with Smart Tones.

As the world's most advanced high-frequency, inaudible "data over audio" technology, Smart Tones have already made waves across multiple sectors. The first public debut of the Smart Tone Ticketing solution was at this year's TechStars FounderCon, which helped establish a frictionless check-in process at the event. AutoMobili-D showcases LISNR automobile connectivity technology

LISNR demonstrated its automobile connectivity technology at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The automobile and transportation industry is at a turning point, undergoing a massive transformation that is rapidly redefining the driver experience and possibilities for the connected car. LISNR is happy to play an important role in this movement.

Every year, the North American International Auto Show brings together the world's top thought leaders, engineers, designers and tech startups to debut cutting-edge technologies and offer a glimpse into the future of mobility. This year, LISNR was among the 50 global tech startups invited to participate in the AutoMobili-D show in Detroit, a unique NAIAS exhibition centered on the automated automotive landscape and the technologies fueling the way forward.

Recently awarded the IoT Breakthrough Award for Innovation of the Year in the Connected Car category, LISNR is advancing automotive automation through seamless authentication and device-to-device connectivity. 2016 was a particularly monumental year for LISNR.

2016 was a particularly monumental year for LISNR. Smart Tones went through game-changing improvements so that they now are bidirectional, locally generated, 26 times more reliable and capable of handling three times the data throughput. These cutting-edge enhancements have further fastened LISNR as a trailblazer leading the charge toward the Internet of Sound. 

Below are some of the top highlights from this year.

  • Launch of Smart Tone Ticketing: In partnership with Splash, LISNR made the first official debut of its Smart Tone Ticketing solution at the 2016 TechStars FounderCon. The secure, contactless offline mobile-authentication resulted in a quick, frictionless check-in process. But, more than that, the event exemplified the powerful opportunities, benefits and applications Smart Tones present for businesses around the world.
  • CES Innovation Award Honoree: One of the most notable testaments to LISNR being a best-in-class solution for connecting mobile devices and applications is receiving the nomination for the Consumer Technology Associate CES 2017 Innovations Award in the Software and Mobile Apps category. Having only just recently released the 2-way device to device functionality, LISNR is incredibly proud to receive this honor for the first time.
  • SXSW Interactive Awards Finalist: In 2016, LISNR was named a finalist for the SXSW Music & Audio Innovation Award, a recognition that is a nod toward technology that transforms and enhances the way people hear and experience music. This honor came after working with the Budweiser Made in America Music Festival. LISNR powered the Made in America Festival app, delivering concert attendees with a fast check-in process and proximity-based messaging without the need for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or data connectivity.

At LISNR, your privacy has always been important. Since our technology’s birth, we’ve taken measures to ensure our customers’ privacy and security. How Our Technology Works

LISNR is the only data-over-audio solution that uses ultrasonic, inaudible sound waves to connect and activate various experiences on any device. These high frequency sound waves, which we call SmartTones™, can transmit data using a speaker to and between any smart devices with a microphone. Compared with other audio technologies, LISNR is the only true data-over-audio solution. Our technology completely takes away the need for any audio recording, server calls, or other forms of data connectivity like Wi-Fi, cellular, or Bluetooth to enable LISNR functionality.

Customers embed our SDK on the backend of an application to enable any device with that application to listen for SmartTones. These SmartTones carry bits of data that are demodulated when detected by our SDK.

LISNR SmartTones are comprised of FSK audio signals varying between frequencies of 18.75 kHz and 19.2kHZ, making them inaudible to the human ear. Our SDK only recognizes sounds that fall between that frequency range.

Most sounds that we hear every day, like the sound of a human voice, simply aren’t detectable by LISNR as they fall well below our high frequency range and are filtered out completely by our technology.

We Do Not Save or Record Any Audio or Personal Data

We do not collect or share any personally identifiable information, nor does LISNR record any audio on the device. We rely solely on the microphone to detect and decode our SmartTones. All audio received from the microphone is filtered to only include the high frequency, inaudible sound waves that comprise our SmartTones. LISNR receives and buffers approximately 10 seconds worth of the filtered inaudible audio. Once this data is processed and analyzed, it is overwritten by new data and cannot be saved or recovered in any way.

Audio Data Is Not Passed Over the Network

All audio-related processes are handled locally on the device and never passed over the network. LISNR does not have the capability to deliver audio to a server or move it off of the device in any way.

You Are In Control When Your App Listens for Our SmartTones

LISNR requires access to the device’s microphone to “listen” for SmartTones. Microphone permissions must be granted by users and can be turned off and on at any time at the convenience of the app user in the application settings. We always counsel and require all of our clients to clearly communicate microphone usage to users.

LISNR Chosen as Finalist for SXSW Music & Audio Innovation Award

We have big news! Last week, SXSW named LISNR as a finalist for the SXSW Music & Audio Innovation Award.

The award honors innovation that changes and improves the way people enjoy music. LISNR was nominated specifically for our work with the Budweiser Made in America Music Festival. (Read more about the project or watch our short video below.)

The Made in America Festival app, powered by LISNR, provided real-time information, proximity-based marketing messages and context-driven promotional offers to fans despite the limited connectivity that is common at large festivals.

LISNR was launched at SXSW, and the music industry has always been part of our lifeblood. We’re thrilled to be a finalist for the award, and we have high hopes of taking it home come March.

The idea for LISNR was forged on StartupBus 2012, a pitch competition where entrepreneurs develop a business idea on the drive to SXSW and pitch it upon arrival. Since then, LISNR has grown exponentially, winning a Cannes Lion for Mobile Innovation, being named to the CNBC Disruptor 50, and raising $10 million in Series B funding led by Intel Capital. We’re proud to work with clients like AEG, Visa, and Budweiser.

LISNR is the world’s first and only data-over-audio solution. It creates high frequency, inaudible Smart Tones that can be played by any speaker and picked up by any microphone. This effectively turns any speaker — be it a stadium PA system or the TV in your living room — into a beacon that can trigger second-screen experiences on any device. Unlike Bluetooth, iBeacons, or NFC, LISNR is not dependent on hardware or connectivity, meaning that wherever sound can be played, connections can be made.

LISNR Named Finalist in Fast Company’s 2015 Innovation by Design Awards

For the last four years, Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards has honored designers and businesses working together to solve the problems of today and tomorrow. This year’s competition was the biggest yet, with more than 1,500 projects entered from around the world. Categories included Smart Homes, Social Good, 3-D Printing, Fashion and more.

A panel of established designers and design-minded executives judged the entries on functionality, originality, beauty, sustainability, depth of user insight, cultural impact, and business impact. As Fast Company points out, winners and finalists each “represent what’s best about design today: ‘Big ideas, meticulously thought out details, and a clear viewpoint about how we live now—and how it could be better’.”

I’m so excited to announce LISNR was named a Mobile Apps finalist — one of only 14 companies recognized in this category. And competition was extremely tough; other finalists include industry giants like Google and Instagram.

A Novel Technology

Fast Company called LISNR “a novel technology that can push anything – a song, a video, a shopping link, or an ad – to any smartphone, using soundwaves undetectable to the human ear.”

Unlike other wireless data communications, LISNR’s SmartTones deliver data over inaudible sound waves to mobile apps. Because these audio tones are delivered through existing speaker infrastructure, no new hardware or other costly implementations are needed in order for retailers, sports teams or live event venues to engage with consumers.

And with more speakers on the planet than people, this means any audio speaker can be turned into a beacon capable of sending video, data and messages – creating a whole new network capable of creating mobile engagement with audiences.

LISNR & Miami U “The Startup Life”

Last week Team LISNR had the pleasure of hosting bright-eyed Miami University students for their Backpack to Briefcase Series. The program helps students prepare for life outside of Oxford equipping them with skills that will come in handy during those first job interviews and beyond. As a Miami University alumni I highly recommend programs like these and students you should participate (more than I did)!

So what did we discuss with the students about LISNR and startup life?

The Journey

No one person joined the startup life with the same background and story. Some of us went to school for degrees in Computer Sciences and knew at a young age Programming was in their future. Others graduated from college, joined Corporate America and realized cubicles and watercooler conversations weren’t for them. Others dabbled in grad school for a bit and some just met the right people at the right time. What we all have in common, though, is our passion for innovation and desire to put a dent in The Universe. It’s also not a coincidence that our personalities are all quite colorful and have pretty cool interests outside of work.

The Wearer of Many Hats

As a lover of hats (beanies, caps, bucket, etc) I couldn’t be more pleased to work in an environment that allows me to wear different hats everyday! Hats, of course, meaning roles in this instance. Just because you hold one title doesn’t mean you’re immune to performing tasks outside of that title, which is something I personally welcome! What better way to sharpen your skills than taking on duties you may feel uncomfortable doing. Programmers can become public speakers and client managers become developers. The more skills in your arsenal, the more valuable you become as an employee and the more opportunities you can take.

Flexibility

One of the many perks of startup life is how flexible the culture is. From working hours to the clothes we feel comfortable being productive in, we enjoy many unique freedoms that come with this industry. That goes without saying, it’s imperative to practice self-motivation and discipline. I’m sure all college students diligently work on refining their self-management skills, which gives way to becoming one responsible employee. Speaking of responsibility…

Responsibility

We manage ourselves and sometimes even up, which means it’s necessary to take initiative and manage our time wisely. On smaller teams it’s not uncommon for each employee to be the first line of defense when a problem arises. The fast-paced working environment creates new responsibilities everyday, many of which can be challenging and frustrating. However, with the right team and willingness to make quick adjustments, these responsibilities will be a welcomed test of your abilities.

 

It’s great to see students genuinely interested in startups and technology! Startups can be a risky bet, but these Miami students seemed to be attracted to the unorthodox nature of this industry. I look forward to seeing where they end up after four years in good old Oxford, Ohio.

Last week we were selected as a Webby Awards Official Honoree for our mobile work with the 2014 Budweiser Made In America Music Festival! While nothing we do is for the accolades or notoriety (such is the lot of a B2B company…), it felt really good to be recognized. And this isn’t our first tango with the Awards, having received a similar honor last year for J. Cole’s “Listening Session”, executed in partnership with Roc Nation.

Problem

  • Budweiser needed a mobile experience to accompany the 2014 Budweiser Made in America Festival in Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
  • This mobile application needed engage with festival attendees on-site and in real time, bringing a heightened relevancy to the application as a digital tool for to brand and consumer engagement. The execution needed to increase brand impressions, mine unique physical and digital data points, engage attendees, and be the complete informational and experiential companion to on-site visitors.
  • Current technologies are very good at tracking consumer activity and behaviors on the digital web and making smart brand and advertising decisions based on correlating assumptions on intent and purpose. Every second of a consumer’s web history is recorded, analyzed, understood and acted upon. But innovators are still looking for ways to find consumers offline, in their real lives. A laundry list of technologies exist to make mobile devices contextually smart, but they are falling short, leaving large data holes related to where, when, and what consumers are doing in live and digital environments.

Solution

  • LISNR is a high frequency, inaudible technology; a new communication protocol that sends data over audio. It is a digital sound file that turns any speaker or piece of media into a beacon, working seamlessly across physical and digital spaces more effectively than all current solutions in the marketplace, most notably Bluetooth and traditional ACR.

Outcomes

  • 90% increase in 2015 application downloads (iOS/Android)
  • 35% increase in social activity via 2015 application
  • 20% increase in social account integrations, compared to industry standard
  • 70% push notification penetration, 500K – 750K notifications sent daily
  • 90% click through rate for LISNR triggered content
  • 11.5M brand impressions, 75% attributed to LISNR
