Introducing Local Tone Generation

The most recent version of our tech, LISNR 5.0, contained a number of new product features and improvements to our Smart Tones that will make device-to-device connectivity and delivering memorable experiences easier than ever before.
We’re especially excited about Local Tone Generation, which enables device-to-device communication, bypassing the need for a separate network. Our tones can now be decoded and encoded directly from the device, so no additional connectivity is needed. This new feature opens the door for a wide variety of devices to interact with each other on a wide scale without other forms of connectivity.

Prior to this release, the customer’s app had to pass data to our server to be turned into a tone, downloaded from our server to the user’s device and then played back. We are taking all of the magic of creating a tone on a server and baking it into the mobile API, allowing significant flexibility and speed to build out the best user experiences possible.

For example, you can now use tones to safely and securely authenticate users for mobile payment, venue check-in and other use cases that may require some form of authentication. With LISNR Smart Tones, the information shared is secure and disappears as soon as the sound wave dissipates.

And it’s incredibly reliable, with 100% connectivity in multi-environment tests.

For example, we use this technology to enter our building. Anyone that visits gets a unique key that expires after they visit our office. No need for physical keys that get lost or stolen.

Smart Tones can also be used to power a POS system when used in tandem with an enabled app. A retail customer checks out without every needing her credit card.

You can also use the technology to securely send messages between devices, even in airplane mode.

LISNR is a high-frequency, inaudible technology, a new communication protocol that sends data over audio. As the leader in the Internet of Sound, we use inaudible sound waves called Smart Tones to transmit information. LISNR sends customizable packets of data every second, enabling proximity data transmission, second-screen functionality, authentication and device-to-device connectivity on any LISNR-enabled device. We enable this functionality reliably and more efficiently than Bluetooth (proximity), ACR (2nd Screen) and NFC/RFID (authentication). As an integrated software partner, LISNR powers devices to connect with the world better than ever before.

At LISNR, We Take Your Privacy Seriously

how-lisnr-works-privacy

At LISNR, your privacy has always been important. Since our technology’s birth, we’ve taken measures to ensure our customers’ privacy and security. Following strict guidelines outlined by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, we continue to be committed to providing our customers with the best experience possible.

We encourage you to read the summaries below and contact us if you have any questions.

How Our Technology Works

LISNR is the only data-over-audio solution that uses ultrasonic, inaudible sound waves to connect and activate various experiences on any device. These high frequency sound waves, which we call SmartTones™, can transmit data using a speaker to and between any smart devices with a microphone. Compared with other audio technologies, LISNR is the only true data-over-audio solution. Our technology completely takes away the need for any audio recording, server calls, or other forms of data connectivity like Wi-Fi, cellular, or Bluetooth to enable LISNR functionality.

Customers embed our SDK on the backend of an application to enable any device with that application to listen for SmartTones. These SmartTones carry bits of data that are demodulated when detected by our SDK.

LISNR SmartTones are comprised of FSK audio signals varying between frequencies of 18.75 kHz and 19.2kHZ, making them inaudible to the human ear. Our SDK only recognizes sounds that fall between that frequency range.

Most sounds that we hear every day, like the sound of a human voice, simply aren’t detectable by LISNR as they fall well below our high frequency range and are filtered out completely by our technology.

We Do Not Save or Record Any Audio or Personal Data

We do not collect or share any personally identifiable information, nor does LISNR record any audio on the device. We rely solely on the microphone to detect and decode our SmartTones. All audio received from the microphone is filtered to only include the high frequency, inaudible sound waves that comprise our SmartTones. LISNR receives and buffers approximately 10 seconds worth of the filtered inaudible audio. Once this data is processed and analyzed, it is overwritten by new data and cannot be saved or recovered in any way.

Audio Data Is Not Passed Over the Network

All audio-related processes are handled locally on the device and never passed over the network. LISNR does not have the capability to deliver audio to a server or move it off of the device in any way.

You Are In Control When Your App Listens for Our SmartTones

LISNR requires access to the device’s microphone to “listen” for SmartTones. Microphone permissions must be granted by users and can be turned off and on at any time at the convenience of the app user in the application settings. We always counsel and require all of our clients to clearly communicate microphone usage to users.

As we continue to grow as a company, we pledge to continue:

      • To always be transparent on data we’re using.
      • To always ask for permission when sending content.
      • To always follow best practices in our security procedures.

Your feedback and support is, and has always been, important to us. Please feel free to reach out and email us at support@lisnr.com with any questions or comments. In the meantime, you can review our privacy policy.

What’s New in LISNR 5.0

LISNR_TeamLISNR_Working2a

LISNR’s high-frequency, inaudible technology is already revolutionizing how people communicate with the world around them, but we’re always looking for ways to make it even better.

With LISNR 5.0, we’re introducing new product features and improvements to our Smart Tones  that will make device-to-device connectivity and delivering memorable experiences easier than ever before.

Here’s what you can expect in the new release and our fifth iteration of our tones.

Improved Reliability

This release contains a significant change in the structure of the tone itself, extending the reliable reach of Smart Tones even in challenging, noisy or reverb-filled environments such as stadiums or concert halls.

This means that instead of reaching half of the users down in a basement, for example, or out at a far-flung hotdog stand, we can now consistently reach all of them.

Improved Efficiency

Consumers expect things to happen instantaneously now, and we’re working to push the product forward to meet those expectations.

We have made several changes that increase the efficiency of data transmission with this round of updates. This means we can deliver experiences to more users, larger areas and with a higher level of accuracy than ever before.

With this new round of updates, LISNR-enabled devices can now detect a Smart Tone as fast as 0.6 seconds. For example, you can trigger a device to display a coupon or other event within one second of detecting a tone. This is huge for today’s users who expect to get what they want immediately.

Introducing Local Tone Generation

Local Tone Generation enables device-to-device communication, bypassing the need for a separate network. Our tones can be decoded and encoded directly from the device, so no additional connectivity is needed. This new feature opens the door for a wide variety of devices to interact with each other on a wide scale without other forms of connectivity.

Prior to this release, the customer’s app had to pass data to our server to be turned into a tone, downloaded from our server to the user’s device and then played back. For example, you can now use tones to safely and securely authenticate users for mobile payment, venue check-in and other use cases that may require some form of authentication.

And it’s incredibly reliable, with 100% connectivity in multi-environment tests.
